Sustainability

Sustainability starts on our land.

We believe that the production of sustainable food starts on our farmland, and is a part of natures natural cycle.

If food is to be sustainable, then one must look at practices along the entire food chain, from farm to table.

Everyone must have food to survive, but the challenge of preparing this food in as sustainable a way as possible is becoming more and more challenging.

Everything from correct payment to the Farmer for the raw materials, work pressure on the Farmer, and the ever-increasing climate consequences around the production of food.

The climate is changing. There is no doubt about it.

As farmers, we see this better than most people. The conditions under which we grow our food are constantly changing.

As a company, we want to do what we can to improve both the sustainability of the farmer, the sustainability of the planet and for the consumer.

The UN's sustainability goals in practical use

The UN's Sustainable Development Goals are the world's joint work plan to eradicate poverty, fight inequality and stop climate change by 2030.

Our aim is to incorporate several of the UN's Sustainability Goals into our operations.

We believe this is a good framework around which we as local food producers can build our business and at the same time help make a real difference for local farmers in Bergen.

.

In the following points, we have described how we relate to some of the goals.

End hunger, achieve food security, better nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.

Nothing less than to eradicate hunger!

Well, we will not try to eradicate hunger in the world alone, but we believe it is important to produce as much local food as possible, and to import as little as possible of what we can produce ourselves.

There must be more focus on real local food production, on producing food in a more sustainably way and utilizing the resources from agriculture, from the forest and from the sea in a better way.

Through our focus on locally produced food from Bergen, Norway's second largest city, we focus on real locally produced food.

Our products must be produced or refined in Bergen.

In this way, we believe that we are contributing to the UN's goal, at a local level in Bergen

Achieve equality and strengthen the position of girls and women in society

In our company, it is the women who have the majority of the shares, they own a total of 60% of the company.

Two of the women are operators of their own farms, and one is the owner and general manager of her own catering company with several employees.

In VAREGGA, it is the women who rule, and the men who work...

Promote lasting, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full employment and decent work for all.

Our company philosophy is that the Farmer should be left with more of the profit on his own raw materials.

By paying more for the raw material directly to the Farmer than he would achieve by delivering elsewhere,

we ensure that the Farmer achieves a better profit on his own farm.

In this way, we contribute to lasting economic growth for the farms with which we collaborate.

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

It goes without saying that when you run a company whose aim is to get as many people as possible to buy food that is produced locally, then you yourself also shop locally as far as possible.

We also use local companies as far as we can when we purchase goods and services for our own company.

By offering genuine locally produced food of high quality and together with our skilled chefs focus on using the whole animal, we want to help reduce food waste.

We also have producers who accept leftovers from bakeries and breweries, and use this as animal feed.

In this way, we also help to reduce food waste and utilize resources.

By reducing the transport of the goods between us and the end consumer, we contribute to the reduction of unnecessary pollution.

Less transport also reduces the need for packaging.

Protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of ecosystems, ensure sustainable forest management,

combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

What can we as a company do to take care of life on land?

Our producers produce roughage for their animals locally, and use animal manure in the best possible way.

Then you can reduce the consumption of artificial fertiliser, and save the environment from unnecessary emissions from fodder production.

Producers are encouraged to use as little imported soy as possible.

One of our producers, for example, only uses concentrate without imported soy, and which is based on Norwegian-produced grain.

Our raw material suppliers drain and keep infield in good condition to get the best possible use of the area for their forage production.

They use and care for the natural landscape around them as a resource in their production.

They use open field pastures where this is possible.

By actively using open field resources, the landscape is varied and this strengthens and preserves the species diversity of insects and other small critters in nature.

Strengthen the instruments needed to carry out the work, and renew global partnerships for sustainable development.

When several people work together towards a common goal, only then do you achieve results.

We want to contribute to more of the producers in Bergen being able to deliver their products locally, to the population of Bergen.

By gathering producers in a local collaboration, more can be achieved than just cooking, expertise is shared, social meeting places are created and resources are used more efficiently.

In this way, we contribute to more people in Bergen having a lower climate footprint when they shop for the food they need.
